5 Minutes with… Andy Cooling

What are your main responsibilities?

Heading up the Passive, Fire Risk Assessment, PFX and Mechanical Departments.

What is your main objective within this role?

To build a strong positive culture, engaged and driven teams who continue to provide the very best levels of service to clients both internally and externally of the group.

What jobs did you do prior to joining us?

For the past five years, I led another AIM-listed network of fire safety businesses as UK Operations Director/MD, directly responsible for many brands, with over 350 employees delivering £45m revenue across the UK wide office network.

Prior to this, I owned both passive and active fire safety businesses before separate sales into the Group in 2017 and 2019.

What prepared you for your role here?

I have been fortunate to have experience of leading multiple teams across the UK, with responsibility for all operations, service, sales, marketing and customer service across the whole range of fire safety markets for fire protection/detection equipment service and install and passive fire protection.

What’s the best thing about working at Marlowe Fire & Security?

I have met some really great people who care about the business and support each other, along with being part of a group where there is a great opportunity for people to develop personally and professionally.

What has been the highlight of your career at Marlowe Fire & Security over the years?

I have only been with the business for six months, however, I would say the highlight has been meeting and getting to know all the different people, departments and businesses that make up the wider group and hearing positive messages and desire to continually improve.

Are you working on any special projects?

I’m currently spending a lot of time meeting and getting to know people in the business. I’m also working with my teams to improve commercially and operationally while looking at opportunities to maximise growth. Then there’s the work on the quality of delivery of sites to enhance our first time fix rate and reduce the number of revisits through closer contract management and site supervision, giving added benefit to the client and to the business as a whole.

What has been your greatest personal achievement?

My two girls. I love being active, so having the opportunity to travel and see both competing at a good level in their respective sports (Tennis and Netball) is amazing.

What makes you most proud of your team/company?

I really appreciate how the team support each other and want success for each other and the business.

Where were you born/where did you grow up?

Lincoln. I spent my life in Lincolnshire until moving to Nottinghamshire during Covid.

Do you have any pets?

A mad puppy called Ozzy (Border Collie) and an old grumpy cat called Jack!

What’s on your bucket list?

Before joining Marlowe, I had the opportunity to travel the world for nine months watching my daughter play tennis in places like South America, Central Europe and the Caribbean. I’d really love to go back with my wife so she can also experience some of the amazing places we didn’t get to see together.

Who are your fantasy dinner party guests – dead or alive?

Barack Obama, Freddie Mercury, Robert Downey Jr, Judi Dench, Kate Moss.

What are the best things in life?

Friday evening, a glass of wine, unwinding and unpicking the week with my wife while listening to some old school music!!
